Founders & Educational Support

Jenifer Shahda | Co-Founder

Jenifer Shahda is an experienced educator with nearly 20 years in the field, holding a degree in elementary education. After studying Orton-Gillingham at the Schenck School, she has spent the last seven years as an OG tutor.  Jenifer's naturally gentle nature endears her to both colleagues and children, making her a beloved figure in the educational community. Passionate about ensuring that children have access to the outdoors and physical movement as part of their daily experience, she brings a holistic approach to her work. This dedication to nurturing the whole child inspired her to co-found Oak House with McCalla, where she continues to make a meaningful impact on students' lives.

McCalla Hill | Co-Founder

McCalla Hill is a passionate Literacy Specialist who blends her love for reading, writing, painting, and hiking into a unique educational experience. Known for her vibrant energy, she is often found barefoot and occasionally forgets her keys, a testament to her ADHD-fueled creativity. Her journey into founding a school was inspired by her belief that every human is a gift to society and school is not a place to EARN a spot in society, rather it is a place where society helps every child see their worth and belonging now and in the future.

She has an M.Ed. in education from the University of Montevallo and trained in Structured Literacy through the Schenck School and Local OG Fellow Jennings Miller. Her three children attend Oak House and her husband, Liam, is on staff as well!

Liam McKaharay

Collaborative & Proactive Solutions Specialist

Liam McKaharay is happy to apply his long history of HR and Medical Practice Management to his role at Oak House. Liam recently completed his Collaborative and Proactive Solutions training with Dr. Ross Greene and is excited to implement it more fully at Oak House this year. As a neurodivergent individual who often found himself “in trouble” during his school years, he brings a unique vision to Oak House and a deep passion for uncovering the joy in every child, particularly through their special interests. Liam has followed a patchwork approach to traditional education, considering himself a lifelong learner instead. As a result, he is dedicated to creating an educational environment that supports all students regardless of their path. Prioritizing connection with the students at Oak House, he enjoys helping them work through social conflicts in a way that avoids blame or shame. In his spare time he enjoys getting coffee with his wife McCalla, hanging with his cat Brisket, expanding his vinyl collection, and taking his 3 children to movies, anime conventions, and comic book shops.

  • Skipper Hill

    Math Study Hall Support

After obtaining a degree in theoretical mathematics from Auburn University, Skipper spent 35 years in the software industry.  When he was young he always wanted to teach.  Marriage and family led him into the software business as a means of making a living.  But in 2012, he made the decision to pursue his desire to teach and began tutoring in 2013.

His tutoring style is upbeat, positive, and goal oriented.  He focuses on developing a positive relationship with the student from the very beginning.  Being a lifelong learner, he understands and appreciates the effort that goes into fully understanding a topic.  He believe in the power of using Socratic questioning to evaluate whether or not the student truly understands a concept.

  • Burke Hill

    Study Hall Support

Burke was born in the 1950s and couldn’t imagine an environment of understanding, concern, and interest in the human spirit could be an actual school, but that is what she sees at Oak House. She was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama.  She graduated high school and was fortunate enough to have parents that gave her several chances at university, but she ended up focused on friends, fun, and lifelong learning outside of a traditional environment.

As luck would have it, she fell madly in love with a guy whose major was math, but he minored in the same field as she did!  They ended up with two daughters and her focus became her family. Since then until today, they have loved, laughed and worked together, with moves and dogs and cats and millions of wonderful people making everything pretty great. Now she is excited to get to spend time at Oak House and share life and her love of literacy from her University days with the students and people at Oak House.
